The Problem

In Canada, 452 people experience a traumatic brain injury (mTBI) every single day – roughly one person every three minutes. Concussions threaten the long-term brain health of children, amateur athletes, and military personnel.

Today, more than 10% of young athletes experience a concussion every year and an astounding 50% of concussions in youth sports go undiagnosed. Up to 20% of military personnel deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan experienced an mTBI while deployed and up to one-third continue to experience persistent symptoms.

Currently, concussions are diagnosed subjectively through physical, cognitive, and behavioural methodologies, which can be misinterpreted and manipulated. Left untreated, concussions can affect a person’s health and quality of life for the rest of their life.

The Potential

Clinical scientists at Neurolytixs have discovered a way to fundamentally change the way concussions are diagnosed in amateur sports and active duty: with a prick of a finger. The first test of its kind to yield accurate results, the simple finger-prick blood test leverages artificial intelligence to help diagnose concussions. Neurolytixs provides rapid and accurate diagnostics for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) using dried plasma spot and metabolite measurements via a mass spectrometer.


The Tool: A two-step diagnostic process that is fast and efficient

Patients (such as athletes, soldiers, children, etc.) document their “chemical fingerprint” by submitting a baseline blood sample at the start of the season. This baseline is important as it provides the most accurate, personalized assessment for patients.

Step 1:
BASELINE SAMPLE:

If a possible concussion occurs, a new finger-prick blood sample is then sent to the lab for testing within a 72-hour window post-incident and is compared with the athlete’s original baseline sample. This step can accurately determine if the individual has had a concussion or not within 20 minutes.

Step 2:
POST-IMPACT SAMPLE:

This diagnostic tool will help remove injured athletes from play, preventing further acute injury, and supporting stronger strategies to help concussion patients recover. In training settings and deployment for Canadian Armed Forces members, this technology can be life-saving for our military personnel following blast injury.
